As the post-Kallol era novelist, Narendra Nath Mitra quietly completed his preparations for establishing his position in the early 1940s. Narendra Nath's greatness in Bengali literature lies in his short stories. These stories are a testament to the strength of his creative spirit. Almost every one of his stories shines with artistic unity, layered meaning, and sudden flashes of brilliance. He is a king in this artistic domain. Despite being more famous as a short story writer, he was also a successful creator in novel writing. His novels have become profound and sensitive narratives of the real life of social people and a truer life. The experiences of peaceful rural life, the floating middle class in the semi-urban towns, and the limited areas of metropolitan Kolkata form the central themes of his novels. In discussing his novel Dwipapunj (Island), he said, "In none of my works am I interested in introducing strangers. The familiar ones have become well-known." Critics say, "Narendra Nath's literary realm is built around these three terrains of experience. He has not ventured beyond these... This intimate world of his direct observation is the source of his power." In these ground-level narratives, he has shown deep realism. He has also internalized ‘the imagination linked to recognition’ and brought it to life in his stories. Narendra Nath's originality in literature is as evident in his short stories as it is in his novels. Not all of his novels are easily accessible now. However, their place and role in the history of Bengali literature are always inevitable. Except for a few widely read and famous novels like Dwipapunj and Chena Mahal, many of his other novels have faded into obscurity. With this in mind, efforts have been made to publish Narendra Nath Mitra's complete works in volumes.
