Joy Goswami was born on November 10, 1954, in Kolkata. He spent his childhood and early adulthood in Ranaghat and is currently based in Kolkata. He has participated in writer’s retreats in Iowa, USA, and has travelled to Melbourne and Sydney in Australia. He has also joined poets from China in Beijing and Shanghai for the "Almost Island Dialogue." He has received the Ananda Puraskar twice, the Sahitya Akademi Award, the "Rachanasamagra" Award from the Indian Language Council, and the "Poet Laureate" honour at the Mumbai International Literary Festival. He has been awarded the Bangabhushan and Bangabhivushan titles, as well as the "Murtidevi" Award by the Bharatiya Gyanpeeth. He holds honorary D.Lit degrees from Kolkata University, North Bengal University, and Kalyani University.
