Subodh Ghosh
Subodh Ghosh was born in 1909 in Hazaribagh. His ancestral home is in Bahar village of Bikrampur, Dhaka district, Bangladesh. His childhood and youth were mainly spent in the Hazaribagh region. He was a student at St. Columbus College in Hazaribagh. He developed himself in the library of the philosopher Mahesh Ghosh. Subodh Ghosh had a varied career. He worked as a tutor, bus conductor, truck driver, and even as a circus performer. He also worked as a sweeper in the Bombay Municipal Corporation for a brief period. At one point, he traveled all the way to East Africa, earning a living by administering vaccinations during an epidemic.
After wandering through many paths, in the late 1930s, he joined the Anandabazar Patrika newspaper, working in the Sunday section. Gradually, he became a senior assistant editor and one of the editorial writers. His first story, Ajyantrik (The Mechanical), was written at the request of friends. Following this, Fossil (Fossil) was published, creating a stir in Bengali literature. Many of his stories and novels were adapted into films. He received the Anand Award and the Jagattarini Medal from Calcutta University. Though his outward demeanor appeared serious, in closer circles, he was open-hearted and sociable.
He passed away on March 10, 1980.
