Unish Shataker Kathkhodai by Asit Pal [Hardcover]
In 19th century Calcutta, wood carving by many artists rose to the level of a specialized art. Most of these artists did not come with any formal art education. These artists often exceeded the standards of traditionally educated artists. This medium challenged the photographic image that once consisted only of wood and iron.
By the late 19th century Priyagopal Das had become an institution in his own right. His woodcuts were published in most of the newspapers published in Calcutta. Priyagopal alone is one hundred in creating advertisements with all types of product promotion pictures starting from calendars! No formal education was required. He developed his work habits himself.
Very little information is available about the woodcarving artists of the period. From that point of view, this is the first time that the information that has been collected so far about only one artist has been presented to the readers in a book with more than four hundred pictures.
