Dr. Gautam Karmakar (1960–) — For over forty years, he has been a successful creator of Bengali science fiction comics. He resides in Bishnupur, in the Bankura district. This self-taught artist began his journey in the world of illustration at the age of fifteen. From a young age, he had a keen interest in writing adventure comics about interplanetary expeditions. His popular comic character is astronaut "Commander Bose." For many years, he created comic strips for newspapers like Bartaman, Overland, and Ei Samay. He has brought numerous famous stories from world literature and ancient Indian literature into the pages of comics. His adaptations of Batrish Singhasan, Jataka Tales, and Vetal Panchavimshati once created a huge buzz among readers. Currently, he is contributing comics to Shuktara, Chirasabuj Lekha, and the magazine Comics o Graphics. Among his newly created comics, the noteworthy graphic novels Detective Deepak Chatterjee vs. Bazpakhi and Pather Panchali, based on the works of Sriswapankumar, have been published in Comics o Graphics. In recognition of his lifelong contributions, he was awarded the Comics o Graphics Award in 2014.
