Upanyas Samagra 3 by Sunil Gangopadhyay [Hardcover]
In the 1960s, when poet Sunil Gangopadhyay was writing his first novel Yubak-Yubati purely at his own whim, without any urge to publish, the landscape of Bengali novels was undergoing significant changes. We began to see characters in stories of this time seeking liberation not in the shadow of romance, but in introspection and self-absorption. Young men and women ventured out to search for the meaning of life, in their own unique ways. Yet, the connection of life had been broken, and words had lost their meanings. Nevertheless, readers were not mistaken in recognizing their anguish. Sunil Gangopadhyay himself identified this context as 'interpretationless restlessness'. This restlessness was rooted in the profound pain of seeking self-realization.
Sunil's defining emergence as a storyteller occurred with Atmaprakash (Self-Revelation). How he began his journey, crossing the vast geography of Bengali literature from this novel, is a remarkable achievement. That journey has not yet ceased. In the realm of Bengali novels, Sunil Gangopadhyay has become a institution in himself. His mastery in novel-writing, character portrayal, creation of vivid human representations, sense of time, values, skill in choosing diverse stories, fervor for exploring life, search for truth, and aesthetic sense—he has mastered them all. In every domain, he is distinct and brilliant. His novels are a treasure of Bengali literature. From his first novel to those written at the beginning of the 21st century, Sunil remains equally vibrant and lively. Under his pen, the novel has attained new artistic dignity.
An arrangement has been made to publish all of Sunil Gangopadhyay’s novels in volumes. Previously, Collected Novels 1 and Collected Novels 2 have been released. Now, Collected Novels 3 is out. This volume includes ten novels: Kalo Rasta Sada Bari (Black Road, White House), Megh Brishti Alo (Clouds, Rain, Light), Kendrabindu (Focus), Arjun (Arjun), Achenna Manush (Unknown Person), Swapno Lajjahin (Shameless Dream), Beche Thakar Nesha (Addiction to Life), Kobi O Nartaki (The Poet and the Dancer), Dorpone Kar Mukh (Whose Face in the Mirror), and Nodir Opar (Across the River).
