Narendranath Mitra, a prominent writer of Bengali literature, established his place in the literary world silently in the early 1940s, following the post-Kallol literary era. His greatest contribution to Bengali literature lies in his short stories. The power of his creative spirit is clearly evident in these stories, which are marked by artistic coherence, rich subtext, and sudden bursts of brilliance. Narendranath's stories shine with the splendor of his artistry, and in this literary domain, he stands as an emperor. Despite his fame as a short story writer, Narendranath was also a successful novelist. His novels became deep, sensitive narratives of social reality, reflecting a more authentic and profound life. The core subjects of his novels are rooted in the experiences of rural tranquility, the middle class in small towns, and the confined spaces of metropolitan Kolkata.

In discussing his novel Dweeppunj (Islands), he mentioned, "I have no desire to introduce unfamiliar people into my works; instead, those who are familiar become more recognizable." Critics suggest that the three realms of experience — rural, small-town, and urban life — form the foundation of Narendranath's literary works, and it is within this intimate world that his strength lies. These novels showcase his deep sense of realism, while also integrating a kind of "abhinaya" (realization) with imaginative elements.

Narendranath's originality in literature is apparent not just in his short stories, but also in his novels. Though many of his novels are not easily accessible today, their place and significance in the history of Bengali literature are undeniable. Apart from some widely read and famous novels like Dweeppunj and Chena Mahal, other works of his have faded into obscurity due to various challenges. With this in mind, an effort has been made to publish Narendranath Mitra's complete works in volumes, making his invaluable contributions to Bengali literature accessible to present and future readers.
