Soumitra Chatterjee
Soumitra Chatterjee was born on January 19, 1935, in Krishnanagar. His father was Mohit Kumar Chatterjee, and his mother was Ashalata Chatterjee. Due to his father's job, his childhood was spent in various parts of West Bengal. His memories were filled with the aftermath of the famine and the independence movement. From a young age, he showed an interest in acting, alongside a deep love for books. During his college years, he came under the influence of Shishir Kumar Bhaduri.
In 1959, he made his film debut with Apur Sansar (The World of Apu), and thereafter, he appeared in fourteen films directed by Satyajit Ray, among many other films. He was honored with numerous prestigious awards, including the Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and more recently, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. A legendary actor, he was equally active in the theater. In recent years, his portrayal of the title role in King Lear was highly praised.
Soumitra was also a master of the spoken arts. His journey into poetry began in his adolescence. In his youth, he co-edited the literary magazine Ekakshan with Nirmalya Acharya. Despite his busy schedule, he regularly composed poetry. He passed away on November 15, 2020.
