Bimal Kar was born on 3rd Ashwin 1328, which corresponds to 1921 in the Gregorian calendar. His childhood was spent in various places: Jabalpur, Hazaribagh, Gomo, Dhanbad, and Asansol. He was a graduate of Calcutta University.
His professional career began in 1942 with the A.R.P., and in 1943, he worked at the Munitions Production Depot in Asansol. In 1944, he joined the Railways and moved to Kashi. He was the co-editor of the magazine Parag, edited by Manilal Bandopadhyay, and later worked as a sub-editor for Pashchim Banga and Satyajug magazines. These roles were between 1946 and 1952. From 1954 to 1982, he was associated with the weekly magazine Desh. From 1982 to 1984, he served as the editor of the monthly magazine Shiladitya.
He received numerous awards, including the Anand Award in 1967 and 1992, the Academy Award in 1975, the Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay Award from Calcutta University in 1981, and the Narsingh Das Award from Delhi University in 1982. He was a leading figure in the Chotogolpo - Notun Riti (Short Story - New Style) movement.
He passed away on August 26, 2003.
