Akutagawa Ryunosuke is a very prominent name in the Japanese literary world. After the publication of 'Rashomon' and 'Nak' at the age of only twenty-four, Akutagawa's place in the Japanese literary world was well established. After reading 'Nak', Japanese literary emperor Natsume Soseki wrote a letter to Akutagawa with enthusiastic praise. Akutagawa's works are characterized by crystal-clear language, dense plot, imaginative variety, subtle satire and humor, sensitive yet dispassionate point of view. Akutagawa showed remarkable skill in reshaping elements from ancient Japanese and Chinese sources. Some of the unreal stuff comes so effortlessly into these stories that they don't even seem contrived. After the age of thirty, for various reasons, a shadow of mental exhaustion casts a longer and longer shadow over Akutagawa. In his last five years, many of his compositions are drawn from his own life and have a particularly melancholic tone.
