Due to the untimely death of Rabijibani author Prashant Kumar Pal, the publication of the tenth volume of Rabijibani had been delayed for a long time. After overcoming that setback, the tenth volume (1333-35 / 1926-29) has now been published. During this period, much of Rabindranath's time was spent fulfilling invitations from various European countries. He had come at the behest of his friends, but the invitation soon transformed into a compelled engagement with the fascist Mussolini. This led to a storm of questions and criticism worldwide. However, there was no lack of interest and curiosity surrounding Rabindranath in many other European countries.
The travelogue, which was being sent to Vishwabharati’s journal by his companion Prashantchandra Mahalnobis, had been interrupted for some unknown reason, preventing its proper publication. As a result, Rabindranath himself believed that no account of his long, glorious travels had been preserved. During this extensive journey, he met old friends as well as many new internationally renowned personalities. Despite repeated bouts of illness, he continued his travels.
During his medical treatment in Hungary, he began writing in his own handwriting, and this led to the inception of Baikali (The Evening). The following summer, while immersed in writing Jatiyo Upanyas (The National Novel) in the hills of Shillong, the poet hurriedly returned to Kolkata with the long-held resolution to re-establish India's Eastern connections with the East Indian Archipelago.
The account of that journey was long and varied. At that time, the works of new writers in modern Bengali literature were criticized for obscenity. Upon returning to India, Rabindranath had to sit as the judge between the two opposing sides. He had also left for Sri Lanka to deliver the Hibbert Lectures, only to return from there. Meanwhile, he had completed Sesher Kobita (The Last Poem) in parallel with his travels. While in Kolkata for medical treatment, he began writing Mahua.
