Subodh Sarkar was born on October 28, 1958, in Krishnanagar, in a refugee family. His father passed away when he was a student in class eight. He is a professor of English language and literature, teaching at City College. He has recited poetry in various countries including the United States, France, Germany, Greece, Russia, Taiwan, and Istanbul. Along with his late wife, poet Mallika Sengupta, he edited the journal Bhashanagar. He also edited Indian Literature, the English journal of the Sahitya Akademi in Delhi. Subodh Sarkar has received several prestigious awards, including the Sahitya Akademi Award (2013), the Binodashakti Chattopadhyay Award, and the Bangla Akademi Award. For his poetry, he has also been honored with the Gangadhar Meher National Award from Sambalpur University, and received honorary D.Litt degrees from Gourbanga University and Vidyasagar University. In 2016, he was a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Iowa in the United States, where he also participated in an international writer's workshop with poets and writers from 33 countries. He lives in Seriti, Kolkata, with his son Roro. Subodh Sarkar is the first president of the West Bengal Poetry Academy.
