Shakti Chattopadhyay
Shakti Chattopadhyay was born on November 25, 1933, in Baharu, Twenty-Four Parganas. He lost his father in childhood and was raised by his maternal grandfather in Baharu and his maternal uncles in Bagbazar. He studied at Baharu High School, Maharaja Kashimbazar School, and Presidency College, but did not complete his studies in Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University. He entered the literary world in 1956 with his poem Yama in the magazine Kobita (Poetry), edited by Buddhadeb Basu. He was also associated with Krittibas magazine and made a significant impact on the poetry scene by publishing Kobita Saptahiki (Poetry Weekly).
He authored, translated, and edited over a hundred poetry and prose books, with countless additional writings scattered across various magazines and journals. Shakti Chattopadhyay received numerous accolades, including the Ananda Puraskar, the Sahitya Akademi Award, Gangadhar Meher Award from Sambalpur University, and a posthumous Rabindra Puraskar. As a professional, he was associated with the Anandabazar Patrika as a journalist. While serving as a guest professor of Creative Writing at Visva-Bharati, he passed away suddenly due to a heart attack on March 23, 1995, in Santiniketan.
