Shakti Chattopadhyay was born on November 25, 1933, in Baharu, in the district of Twenty-Four Parganas, India. He lost his father at a young age. He grew up under the care of his maternal grandfather in Baharu and his maternal uncles in Bagbazar. He studied at Baharu High School, Maharaja Kashimbazar School, and Presidency College, but did not complete his studies in Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University. He entered the literary world with his poem Yama published in Kobita magazine, edited by Buddhadeb Bose, in 1956. He was also associated with the magazine Krittibas. Through his weekly poetry magazine Kobita Saptahiki, he made a significant impact in the poetry world.
He authored and edited over a hundred collections of poetry and prose, along with numerous uncollected works published across various magazines and journals. He received several awards, including the Ananda Puraskar, Sahitya Akademi Award, Gangadhar Meher Award from Sambalpur University, and the Rabindra Puraskar posthumously. Professionally, he worked as a journalist with Ananda Bazar Patrika. While serving as a visiting professor in Creative Literature at Visva-Bharati University, he passed away suddenly from a heart attack on March 23, 1995, in Santiniketan.
