After Albert Einstein's death in 1955, his brain was preserved at Princeton University for scientific research. However, the exact nature of the research conducted on his brain was unclear. The doctor who had custody of the brain also became somewhat elusive over time. Forty years after Einstein’s death, journalist Peter N. Paternity tracked down this doctor, who was located in New Jersey, on the eastern coast of America. When the doctor learned that Einstein’s granddaughter, living in Berkeley on the western coast, wanted the brain returned, Michael took on the responsibility of driving the brain across the country.
The third passenger in the car was Einstein's brain, preserved in a glass jar. During the journey to return the brain, Michael encountered a series of unexpected events. "With the Car and Einstein's Brain" is a narrative that blends travelogue, autobiography, philosophy, and history. Originally published in 2000 in Harper’s Magazine, the piece won the National Magazine Award.
