Satyajit Ray (2 May 1921 – 23 April 1992) was a legendary Indian filmmaker, widely regarded as one of the greatest of the 20th century. Born in Calcutta into an artistic Bengali family, Ray initially worked as a commercial artist before transitioning to filmmaking after being inspired by Jean Renoir and Bicycle Thieves (1948). He directed 36 films, including features, documentaries, and shorts. Ray was also a writer, illustrator, composer, and graphic designer, creating iconic fictional characters like Feluda and Professor Shonku. He received an honorary degree from Oxford University for his contributions to cinema.
