"The extraordinary life of the liberator of India, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, spans chapter after chapter of the national movement. His active life stretched from country to country, embodying not just an ideal leader or orator but also a philosopher, visionary, and a powerful writer. Throughout various phases of his life, in different conditions and countries, he penned numerous works on diverse subjects that are scattered in such a way that gathering them all into a comprehensive collection is undoubtedly a challenging, research-intensive endeavor. Since the establishment of the Netaji Research Bureau at Netaji Bhavan in 1957, a coherent picture of his multifaceted life has been gradually constructed. Over the past two decades, various writings, speeches, essays, letters, statements, and documents by Subhas Chandra have been collected and edited from across the nation and the world. This scattered collection of works is now set to be published as a complete collection. This entire body of work will be completed in several volumes—a time-consuming undertaking, but initiating this work brings a deep sense of fulfillment in fulfilling a noble national duty.
A few words on the layout of the first volume of the collected works are necessary.
Part One: This section includes his unique work Bharat Pathik (The Wayfarer of India), Subhas's unfinished autobiography, beginning in his childhood and concluding in his student years in England. The book reveals not only his personal journey but also paints a vivid picture of contemporary Bengali society and the Bengali Renaissance.
Part Two: This section compiles 208 letters by Subhas Chandra, beginning with letters to his mother, Prabhabati, and his elder brother, Sarat Chandra, from his youth. The section concludes with a letter to Sarat Chandra from the Mandalay Jail in early 1927, just before his release. Notably, seven letters to Sarat Chandra Bose about his decision to resign from the Indian Civil Service, along with other important letters, are being published here in their entirety for the first time. These heartfelt letters are essential to understanding the evolution of Subhas Chandra's mindset, as they touch upon personal challenges, philosophical questions, and ideological issues. Reading the autobiography alongside these letters provides a delightful experience for any thoughtful reader.
Part Three: By the beginning of the second decade, when Subhas Chandra devoted himself to public service, his ideological development had progressed significantly. He symbolized the awakened youth of India and was seen by many as the leader of the forthcoming national revolution. This section contains various writings from this time, during the eventful period of Subhas's life, when the seeds of the future leader were sown—the leader who later united people across the length and breadth of India in the web of ideals and the mission to build a prosperous India. Therefore, this section holds great significance.
Part Four: This concluding section of the volume serves as an appendix, containing factual writings that complement the autobiography, letters, and various essays collected here. The writings from Subhas Chandra's later life will be published in successive volumes over time.
Netaji, the life force of the nation, remains an infinite source of inspiration for people of all eras. If we succeed in completing the monumental task of gathering and publishing these inspirational words, it will be a blessing for us all."
