Shrijat was born on December 21, 1975, in Kolkata. His father, the late Tapan Bandopadhyay, was a journalist, and his mother, Shreela Bandopadhyay, is a classical music singer. His paternal grandfather, the renowned musicologist Tarapad Chakraborty, was a distinguished figure in the field of music.
His first poetry booklet, Shesh Chithi (The Last Letter), was published in 1999, after which he decided to drop his surname. In 2004, his poetry collection Uranta Shob Joker (Flying All Jokers) earned him the Anand Puraskar and the Kritibas Puraskar. In 2014, for his collection Karkatkanti’r Desh (Land of the Cancerous Sun), he received the Bangla Akademi Award, and in 2020, he was honored with the Sunil Gangopadhyay Samman from the West Bengal Poetry Akademi.
In recent years, Shrijat has also ventured into novel writing, alongside his continued work in songwriting and screenwriting. Representing Bengali poetry, he has participated in numerous international literary events, such as the International Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa in 2006, the Edinburgh International Book Festival in 2008, and the Hay Festival in Wales in 2017.
