Sukanta Gangopadhyay was born on January 21, 1961, in Uttarpara, Hooghly. His paternal ancestors were from Bihar, while his maternal lineage hails from Dinajpur in Bangladesh. He completed his schooling and college education in Uttarpara. He studied photography and is the head of the technical department at a photo printing company. He began writing during his student years. After his first story was published in the Desh magazine, he gained recognition among a wider audience. He received the Ananda-Snosem Sharad Arghya in 1999 and 2002 for Best Novel, the Ananda-National Insurance Sharad Arghya in 2003 for Best Novel and Best Short Story, and the Dettol-Anandabazar Sharad Arghya in 2006 for Best Short Story. Additionally, he received the Galpomela Award in 1997, the Sahityasetu Award in 2001, the Sutapa Raychaudhuri Memorial Award from the Bangla Academy in 2005, the Shailjananda Birth Centenary Memorial Award in 2007, the Taradas Bandopadhyay Literary Honor in 2013, and the Gajendrakumar Mitra and Sumathanath Ghosh Memorial Award in 2014.
