The Second World War and years of oppression and terror under the fascist regime devastated public life in Italy. The advancing Allied forces gradually weakened the German and Italian fascist powers. Under external pressure and internal uprisings by the anti-fascist liberation militia, Mussolini and other fascist leaders became disoriented.

In the end, Mussolini and some of his close followers were killed at the hands of this liberation militia. Many condemned and guilty fascist leaders fled the country.
