After Gordon Cloade dies in a bomb blast during the London Blitz, his young widow, Mrs. Underhay, inherits the entire Cloade family fortune. Soon after, Hercule Poirot is approached by Cloade’s sister-in-law, who claims that ‘spirits’ have warned her that Mrs. Underhay's first husband is still alive. Poirot is intrigued by the mystery, but more so by the sister-in-law’s true motives. His investigation into the case, involving a missing person and cryptic warnings from the spirit world, leads him deeper into a web of intrigue and suspicion.
