In modern Bengali literature, Divyendu Palit is a name that commands great respect and admiration, both in novels and short stories. He is one of the foremost short story writers of Bengali literature—however, he is not limited to just this recognition. In fact, he is the pioneer of a distinct genre within Bengali short stories. This uniqueness is evident in the diversity of his themes, the breadth of his experiences, and his completely original writing style. Whether deep, seemingly trivial, or stemming from experiences that are almost unfamiliar to us—any event that finds its way into his stories emerges with an unexpected and different significance. His use of nuanced language, flawless dialogues, and a refined sense of proportion make his works exemplary creations.
Over more than four decades, Divyendu Palit's storytelling and exploration have never been static. His work has evolved over time, embracing new twists and revealing fresh wonders. Stories like "Shit-Grishmer Smriti" (Memories of Winter and Summer), "Shok Sabha" (The Mourning Session), "Munnir Shonge Kichu Kshan" (A Few Moments with Munni), "Mahadashay" (In the Great Era), "Daat" (Teeth), "Manusher Mukh" (Faces of People), "Trespassers", and "Maariye Jaoa" (Crossing Over) are part of the early phase of his storytelling that continue to captivate us. As we immerse ourselves in the brilliance of these stories, we move into a more mature phase, with works like "Ekti Mondirer Janmo O Mrityu" (Birth and Death of a Temple), "Gondher Abirbhav" (The Arrival of Scent), "Gupta Biplob" (Secret Revolution), "Mukabhinoy" (Mimicry), "Seemana" (Boundary), "Gali" (Alley), "Kach" (Glass), and "Chhagol Bishoye Du-Chaar Kotha" (A Few Words About Goats) among many other remarkable stories. Each of these stories is different in terms of subject, background, or underlying ideas. The variety is so vast that one might be amazed to think that all these stories are by the same author. Yet, this is followed by yet another shift, and we find ourselves encountering more great works such as "Abirbhav" (The Emergence), "Almer Nijer Bari" (Alma’s Own House), "Shadhuchoron" (Sadhucharan), "Bivek" (Conscience), "Jatiyo Pataka" (National Flag), "Mukhguli" (The Faces), "Gadh Niruddhesh" (Deep Darkness), "Brazil", "Atmaraaksha" (Self-Protection), "Sonar Ghodi" (Golden Watch), "Pet" (Belly), "Gavaskar", "Jetlag", "Trata" (The Savior), "Hindu", "Mother Teresa’s Birth and Death", "Samprakkh" (Relationship), "Gatojonmer Rastay" (On the Road of Past Lives), "Dhoroner Pore" (After Rape), and other unforgettable stories—each incomparable in experience, variety, and artistic achievement.
The collection “Golposamagra” (Complete Stories), meticulously compiled in two volumes, covers the entire body of Divyendu Palit’s vast collection of stories, from his first story published in 1361 to the 68 short and long stories published up to 1405. The second, large volume of this collection brings together the 68 stories published in the last twenty years.
