Nirendranath Chakraborty was born on 19th October 1924 in Chandrapur, Faridpur district (now in Bangladesh). His father, Jitendranath Chakraborty, was a renowned professor of English language and literature. Nirendranath received his education at Bangabashi School, Mitra School, Bangabashi College, and St. Paul's College.
He began his career in journalism at the Pratyaha newspaper and joined Anandabazar Patrika in 1951, where he later became the editor of Anandamela and served as the editorial advisor for Anandabazar Patrika. Nirendranath started writing poetry in his childhood, and besides poetry collections, he also authored books on poetry, novels, and travelogues.
He is well-known for his famous book Bangla: Ki Likben, Keno Likben (Bengali: What to Write, Why to Write), which discusses language, style, and literary techniques. Among his awards are the Ulto-Rath Award (1958), Tarashankar Award (1973), Sahitya Akademi Award (1974), and the Ananda Award (1976). He was the President of the West Bengal Bengali Academy from 2004 to 2011 and was elected as a Fellow of the Sahitya Akademi in 2016. He received the Indira Gandhi Gold Medal from the Asiatic Society in 2015 and was awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Kolkata (2007), Bardhaman University (2008), and Kalyani University (2010).
In 1975, at the invitation of Kolkata University, he delivered a lecture series titled Kobitar Ki o Keno (What and Why of Poetry), which was later published as a book. He traveled abroad frequently and represented India as the only delegate at the World Poet Conference in Liège in 1990. His hobbies included playing bridge and traveling.
