Since Sontu and Jojo were on a college break, they, along with Kakababu, visited Sontu’s uncle’s house in Govindpur’s Taki village. Sontu’s uncle proposed that to raise funds for repairing the village school, a play would be organized, in which only children would perform. After much deliberation, it was decided to stage Sukumar Ray’s play Lakshmaner Shaktishel (Lakshman's Magical Spear), with Kakababu as the director. Jojo was assigned the role of Hanuman, and Sontu got the part of Jambavan. The role of Ram was given to Sukomal, the son of the local circle police officer, Nikhil Mahant.

The rehearsals were going very well, but one day, on his way to rehearsal, Sukomal was kidnapped. As Kakababu started investigating the kidnapping case, he came across Gagan Saha, a local fish trader. Soon after, Nikhil Mahant received a letter demanding a ransom of 500,000 rupees to get his son back. The kidnapper identified himself as Shankhachur.

While searching for Shankhachur, Kakababu himself was kidnapped and taken to Shankhachur’s hideout. Shankhachur strapped a bomb to Kakababu’s body and sent him to the Reuters building to retrieve an electronic notebook from the Home Secretary. This notebook had been recovered by the police from one of Shankhachur’s men and contained some information written in code.
