Promothonath Bishi
Promothonath Bishi was born on June 11, 1901, in the village of Joari in the Rajshahi district of present-day Bangladesh. In 1910, he went to Santiniketan Brahmacharyashram for his education. His student years were spent under the affectionate guidance of Rabindranath Tagore. The founding of Visva-Bharati took place in 1921, and Promothonath was one of its first two students. He completed his Master’s in Bengali from the University of Calcutta, securing first place in the first class (1932). He pursued research at the University of Calcutta on a Ram Tanu Lahiri scholarship (1933-1936). He joined the editorial department of the newspaper Anandabazar Patrika on January 1, 1946. In 1950, he joined the Bengali department at the University of Calcutta. Bishi was a prolific writer, creating works in poetry, novels, drama, short stories, and essays. He was honored with numerous awards, including the Sarojini Basu Gold Medal from the University of Calcutta (1958), the Rabindra Award (1960), the Prafullakumar Sarkar Memorial Award from Anandabazar Patrika (1961), the Padma Shri from the Government of India (1971), the Gandhi Memorial Committee Award (1975), the Sarat Award from the Sarat Samiti (1981), the Vidyasagar Memorial Award from the Government of West Bengal (1983), and the Jagattarini Gold Medal from the University of Calcutta (1983).
He passed away on May 10, 1985.
