Debarati Mitra’s Andhaskule Ghanta Baje was published in 1971, even before she graduated from college, marking her undisputed place in Bengali poetry from that moment on. In her early poetry, she portrayed the beauty and melancholy of a solitary young woman, where love was intense, sensual, and tinged with sorrow. Gradually, her later works began to reflect love blended with tenderness and unconditional affection. Familiar, simple elements of nature in her poetry became profound and intimate, illuminated by an endless interplay of light and shadow from the distant sky. This entire world appears as an enchanted realm, steeped in mystery.
With over ten books to her name, her consciousness seems to expand into new galaxies—now encompassing not only her personal joys and sorrows but also the experiences of humanity, animals, and nature. Her poetry shines with a vivid sense of a living spirituality, connecting deeply with all forms of life.
