His name is Prafulla. Selfless, without greed. The heart and soul of a charitable organization called Bandhab Samiti (Friendship Association). Prafulla loves the people of his village. He shares in their joys and sorrows. His life's mission is to make economically deprived people self-reliant. Yet, for most of the people of Ghorbandipur, Prafulla remains a great mystery. Many ask him, "You who are living in a modest home, chasing the wild buffalo, what do you gain from it?" Prafulla answers, "Joy." For someone who has committed to lighting lamps, a conflict with darkness is inevitable.
By chance, Prafulla has to confront Vishnu Hazra, the leader of the village's antisocial activities. Two members of his association, Golapi and Podmarani, are suddenly murdered. Still, Prafulla's social service does not cease. In fact, at a critical juncture, it shines even brighter. In contrast to today's decaying values, Sunil Gangopadhyay’s novel presents a luminous tale.
