Jagannath Dev is a highly revered deity in Hinduism, particularly in the state of Odisha, India. He is considered a form of Lord Vishnu and is worshiped as the central figure in the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. The name "Jagannath" means "Lord of the Universe" (from Jagat meaning world and Nath meaning lord), emphasizing his role as the protector and ruler of the entire universe.
Jagannath, along with his siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, forms the holy triad worshiped in the temple. These deities are traditionally depicted with unique, large, round eyes, which distinguish them from other idols in Hindu temples. Unlike typical idols, Jagannath's idol has no mouth or nose, which adds to the mystery and reverence surrounding the deity.
The annual Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival) in Puri is one of the most significant events dedicated to Lord Jagannath. During this festival, the deities are taken out of the temple in grand chariots and paraded through the streets of Puri. This procession attracts millions of devotees from across the world.
Jagannath Dev is seen as a symbol of equality, as the festival and worship practices are open to all, regardless of caste, creed, or social status. His teachings and worship encourage unity, love, and devotion to the divine.
