From the moment a Bengali wakes up until they go to sleep, there are two names they utter at least once—first, Rabindranath Tagore, and second, Satyajit Ray. This was written under the pseudonym Baikuntha Pathak by Shyamal Gangopadhyay. By virtue of his lineage, Satyajit had the privilege of being in the presence of that luminous, great personality—Rabindranath. In the poet’s final days, as he immersed himself in art at Santiniketan, a mesmerizing world of nature’s beauty unfolded before young Satyajit. It was then that the golden reservoir of three generations of creative brilliance erupted in an explosion of artistic genius.
Initially, as a craftsman in a British advertising agency, Satyajit emerged as a divine artisan in Bengali publishing, much like the celestial architect Vishwakarma. However, the unseen forces of life transformed this ascetic of visual art into an unparalleled pioneer—shaping cinema, calligraphy, music, and literature into a new creative cosmos.
Then, in 1955, when Pather Panchali, Satyajit’s first film, was released, the global cinematic landscape was illuminated by the brilliance of an extraordinary star. His world-conquering genius in this new artistic medium blended literature, music, melody, light, human emotions, nature, cinematography, illusion, and visuals into a treasure trove of artistic mastery. In time, his multifaceted brilliance transcended the world, surpassing even the boundaries of time itself.
In the later years of his life, this grand creator wrote countless stories imbued with the colors of a rainbow, shining like diamonds. Satyajit Ray has been hailed as one of the "three greatest filmmakers of all time," alongside Charlie Chaplin and Ingmar Bergman. This book is a tribute to the immortal creator whose intellectual and artistic legacy continues to inspire across generations.
