The world-renowned filmmaker Satyajit Ray was born on May 2, 1921, on Garpar Road in North Kolkata. He was the only child of Sukumar Ray and Suprabha Ray. He received his school education at Ballygunge Government High School. He graduated with honors from Presidency College in 1940. In the same year, he enrolled at Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan’s Kala Bhavana but left in 1942 without completing his studies. His professional career began in 1943 at the advertising agency D. J. Kimar. In the meantime, he won awards for designing book covers and illustrations. He also wrote several screenplays. In 1955, his film *Pather Panchali* was released, which won the Best Film honor at the Cannes Film Festival. Satyajit made his debut in the literary world with the English story *Abstraction* (1941). He started writing Bengali literature with the re-launch of the magazine *Sandesh* in 1961. His first story featuring Professor Shanku was *Byomjatrir Diary* (The Diary of a Space Traveller). His first published book was *Professor Shanku* (1965), which won the Akademi Award for Best Children’s Literature in 1967. The *Feluda* series began with the story *Feludar Goyendagiri* (1965). In recognition of his unparalleled creativity, Satyajit was honored with many awards. Notable among them are the Bharat Ratna (India's highest civilian award) and the Legion of Honor (France). His other awards include the Ananda, Vidyasagar, Golden Lion (Venice), and a special Oscar for *Lifetime Achievement*. Satyajit Ray’s books, which include science fiction stories, detective tales, novels, essays, autobiographies, screenplays, edited, compiled, and translated works, total more than sixty. He passed away on April 23, 1992.
