Suman Mahanti was born on July 23, 1970, in Medinipur town. He completed his schooling at Medinipur Collegiate School and earned an MA in English from Kalyani University. By profession, he is a teacher.

He began writing in the mid-1990s, with short stories appearing in various little magazines. In 2007, his story Nagardola was published in Sananda. His works have also been featured in Desh, Sananda, Anandabazar Patrika, Ebela, and several other notable publications.

He has published four collections of short stories:

• Lakshmanrekha (2002)
• Aporichito o Onyanyo Golpo (2006)
• Dashti Golpo (2008)
• Shunya Samudra Periye (2014)

His first novel, Prastutiparba, was published in the Sharadiya Unish Kuri magazine in 2014 (1421 Bengali year).

Suman has also written poetry, featured in Desh, Sharadiya Anandabazar Patrika, Krittibas, Sananda, and others. His poetry collection, Suryasta Opera, was published in 2010.
