Fyodor Dostoevsky's "Zapisky iz Podpolya," more commonly known in its English translation as "Notes from Underground," was identified by André Gide as the "cornerstone" of Dostoevsky's creative work. Indeed, many literary scholars around the world have considered this work to be the most important of Dostoevsky's novels, and the first significant creation in existentialist literature. This is such a unique psychological narrative that readers must thoroughly prepare themselves before reading it. Over two decades ago, Arun Som, a prominent Bengali translator of Russian literature, intended to start his Dostoevsky translation work with this novel. Finally, after resolving all incompleteness and dissatisfaction, his translation of "Notes from Underground" emerged from hiding and became a milestone in Bengali Dostoevsky studies.
