Ashapurna Devi (January 8, 1909 – July 12, 1995) was an Indian Bengali novelist, short story writer, and children's author. The primary subject of her writings was the depiction of 20th-century Bengali life, especially the lifestyle and psychology of ordinary women. In her personal life, Ashapurna was an unassuming mother and housewife who was entirely unfamiliar with Western literature and philosophy. She did not know any language other than Bengali and was deprived of formal education. However, deep insight and observational skills elevated her to one of the greatest writers in Bengali literature. Her trilogy of novels, Pratham Pratisruti (The First Promise), Subarnalata (The Golden Vine), and Bakulkatha (The Tale of Bakul), are considered among the finest works of 20th-century Bengali literature. Several popular films have been made based on her stories. Ashapurna, who wrote over fifteen hundred short stories and more than two hundred and fifty novels, was honored with several literary awards, including the Jnanpith Award, along with numerous other literary awards, civilian honors, and honorary doctorates from various universities. The Government of West Bengal awarded her the highest literary honor, the Rabindra Puraskar. The Government of India bestowed upon her the highest literary honor, the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship.
