Kolkatar Kachhei written in 1957 brought Gajendra Kumar Mitra the Sahitya Akademi Award. Set in early twentieth century, it is the story of Rashamoni and her twin daughters, Shyama and Uma and their diverse yet cruel fate. In his portrayal of the lives of the protagonists Gajendra Kumar Mitra both explores and critiques ruthlessly the then society of Bengal, which treated women with inhuman callousness. Dr. Anasuya Guha, translator of the book, is professor and Head of the Department of English at Bethune College in Kolkata. She is the great granddaughter of the noted editor and journalist Ramananda Chatterjee.
