Upokonthe by Gajendra Kumar Mitra [Paperback]

This book is the second installment in the trilogy Kolkatar Kachei by Gajendrakumar Mitra. While the first book focussed more on the trials and tribulations of the married life of the three daughters of Rashmoni, this book was more concerned about the life trajectories of the children of these sisters, especially Shyama. In the first book all three daughters, especially Shyama and Uma were given ample space to present their side of the story, but in this book, Shyama hogged all the limelight. Uma was hardly given any space and Kamala was all but relegated to become a marginal character. Maybe the writer wanted to show that while the stage of life remains the same the characters who take the center stage change every often. While in the first book, the three sisters took the center stage, in this book they made space for their next generation. Like the first book, Upokonthe is an extremely well-written novel.
