The use of punctuation marks or diacritical marks is a practice in all languages, and Bengali is no exception. Even in the ancient period of the Bengali language, we can see the use of punctuation marks. From the ancient era to the medieval period and through to the modern era, the use of punctuation marks in Bengali has been consistent. However, there are exceptions. Earlier poets and writers did not fully adhere to the practice of punctuation, and some even wrote poetry, novels, and stories without punctuation marks. Many writers and students remain indifferent to the rules of punctuation usage. Some are even unaware of where to place the correct punctuation mark. Rabindranath Tagore was always against the use of punctuation marks, but he too eventually used them. However, there hasn't been any significant writing in Bengali about why punctuation marks should be used. Rabindranath wrote a piece titled "Chihna Bivrat" (Signs of Confusion). Later, Suniti Kumar also wrote briefly on the subject, but it was only a few pages. Yet, punctuation marks play a crucial role in language construction, and we cannot avoid them. Dr. Mohammad Hannan, although a student of Bengali language and literature, has written and researched all of history. In the book he has written about punctuation marks and diacritical signs, history is not left out. For the first time, Bengali language and grammar readers and researchers are receiving a book that deals with the history and rules of punctuation marks, a work that was much awaited. The author has done this work with great care and has also urged for institutional initiatives. After reading this book, we will all feel that such a book was needed much earlier. Dr. Mohammad Hannan, a creator of over a hundred books, is primarily a researcher in the field of history, but he has already shown his expertise in literary research as well. The book *Punctuation Marks and Diacritical Signs in Bengali: History, Rules, and Application* is proof of this. Readers will find plenty of material on language practice in this book. Though it is a research work, it has been made enjoyable for the general reader by using simple and clear language. By quoting from many different books, the author has highlighted the variety in the use of punctuation marks for the reader.
