In Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay's writing, the mysteries of life are revealed in a clear and evocative language. The novel "Chakra" serves as a bright embodiment of this distinctive feature of the author. Set against the backdrop of a village near Burdwan and the city of Kolkata, the novel uncovers a connection between these two seemingly different places, centered around the character Amal Ray. Amal spent his childhood in this village and, after excelling in his exams, never looked back. His childhood love, Parul, also from the village, becomes a subject of fascination for others. After their marriage is arranged, Parul ends the relationship forever due to Amal's passionate advances. Amal goes abroad and marries Mona, while Parul’s husband is a hardworking and honest businessman. Parul is happy and even partners with him in business. Their daughter, Sohag, experiences a strange change when she visits the village with her parents, viewing Parul as her "goddess." Meanwhile, the relationship between Mona and Amal becomes increasingly bitter, as Amal cannot forget Parul even after so many years.

Another fascinating character in the village is the witty Bangaal, who has two wives—one in the village and another in the city. The children from both families have a significant connection. The stories of their lives add another dimension to the novel, highlighting humanity's endless thirst for goodness amidst countless crises and sorrows. Though absent throughout the narrative, Gaurhari Chattopadhyay remains a vivid character. Sohag's friend Panna is also a key thread in the story. Additionally, there is a house snake—an entity without language or role—yet it subtly brushes against the lives of the characters in its own way.

The narrative of "Chakra" weaves together themes of love, self-discovery, and the struggle to break free from old beliefs. It presents a faithful depiction of the gradual encroachment of urban civilization into the heart of rural life. Life is immensely rich, and "Chakra" conveys this story with astonishing sincerity.
