Sukumar Sen

Sukumar Sen was born in January 1900 in Kolkata. He passed the entrance examination in 1917 from Burdwan Municipal High English School, earning the Mohini Mohan Mishra Medal. He completed his I.A. from Burdwan Raj College, securing letters in Sanskrit, Bengali, and Mathematics. He earned a B.A. with honors in Sanskrit from Sanskrit College and an M.A. in Comparative Philology from the University of Calcutta, where he received a gold medal.

In 1924, he was awarded the Premchand Roychand Scholarship. In 1926, he received the Mouat Medal. From 1926 to 1931, he conducted original research and was awarded the Griffith Memorial Prize three times and the Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee Medal twice by the University of Calcutta. He became a university lecturer in 1930, having previously served as an honorary lecturer. He earned his Ph.D. in 1937. From 1954 to 1964, he served as the Khaira Professor and, in 1952, became the head of the Linguistics Department.

He received the Rabindra Puraskar in 1963 and the Vidyasagar Puraskar in 1981. Additionally, he was honored with the Ananda Puraskar, the Ramendrasundar Smriti Puraskar from the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad, the Sarojini Medal, and numerous other accolades. Visva-Bharati University awarded him the title of ‘Deshikottama’, and Burdwan University honored him with a D.Litt.

He authored several books in both English and Bengali.
