This book describes a period in Tibet from 1932 to 1946. It highlights the struggle for power between the Buddhist monasteries and the Chinese soldiers, who repeatedly attempt to take over the monasteries despite a previously signed truce. Meanwhile, the devout and simple people of the country endure constant exploitation by the royal power, foreign invasions, and religious oppression, leading them to revolt.
A blacksmith named Jinpa gets entangled in the power politics of the royal palace, influenced by a princess who commissions him to create jewelry that turns out to be hidden weapons. He becomes caught in a quadrangle of power involving Buddhist monasteries, Chinese soldiers, and the joint commission. Key characters include two powerful monks, Yeshe and Lobsang, Queen Samten, Jinpa's wife Pema, and a young child named Dachan, who is the heir to the primary monastery. Each character strives to advance in their own way, fighting against their enemies. However, all their external battles seem to infiltrate their inner selves.
The novel, set against the backdrop of Buddhist culture, offers a new perspective on the chemistry of life and biology.
