Amar Debottar Sampatti by Nirad Chandra Choudhuri [Hardcover]

Sri Nirad Chandra Chaudhuri was born on November 23, 1897, in Kishoreganj, Mymensingh, East Bengal (now Bangladesh). His father was Upendranarayan, and his mother was Sushilasundari. He spent his childhood in his birthplace until the age of thirteen, then moved to Kolkata. He topped his BA examination in History with honors. However, he did not complete his MA as he was disillusioned with formal exams and textbooks, although his thirst for knowledge was immense and lifelong. He never held a job for long. In 1928, he worked as an assistant editor at Modern Review. He married Amiya in 1932 and left his job at Modern Review. In the late 1930s, he was appointed as the secretary of Sarat Chandra Bose. During World War II, he worked as a commentator on wartime events at Kolkata Radio. Later, in March 1942, he joined All India Radio in Delhi and retired from there. Since 1970, he had been living in England and became a British citizen. His first book, "The Autobiography of an Unknown Indian," was published in 1951. His first book in Bengali, "Bangali Jibane Ramoni," was published in 1968. In 1989, he received an honorary D.Litt. from Oxford and the Ananda Puraskar for "Dai Hand, Great Anarch." In 1966, he won the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize for his book "The Continent of Circe." In 1993, he was awarded the C.B.E. by the Queen of England. In 1997, he received the Vidyasagar Puraskar from the Government of West Bengal. He passed away on July 12, 1999.
