Based on two small ancient incidents, the great poets Valmiki and Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa created two captivating epics. Over time, these stories flourished with the touch of legend, growing into diverse, epic narratives that transcend various countries and languages. They have become deeply intertwined with Indian everyday life, thought, behavior, and conversation. These epics introduce us to many fascinating men and women, blending civilization, culture, mythology, history, philosophy, and the goals of life (dharma, artha, kama, moksha).
Despite changes over time, the characters' qualities—thoughts, faults, aspirations, joys, sorrows, and dreams—resonate with modern human traits. They have become timeless beings through a combination of simplicity and complexity. While the male characters create various inconsistencies in their individuality, the epic women surpass one another in their character diversity. Some have become unforgettable, filled with wonder, mystery, and allure, presented in various forms. Yet, most of the characters, even those known by name, remain relatively unfamiliar to us.
This book presents the known, unknown, and named epic women, exploring their stories with a fresh perspective.
