Shakti Chattopadhyay
Shakti Chattopadhyay was born on November 25, 1933, in Baharu, located in the Twenty-Four Parganas district of West Bengal. He lost his father at a young age and was raised by his maternal grandfather in Baharu and later by his maternal uncles in Bagbazar. His education included studies at Baharu High School, Maharaja Kashimbazar School, and Presidency College. He began a course in Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University but did not complete it.
Shakti entered the literary world in 1956 with his poem Yama in the magazine Kobita, edited by Buddhadeb Bose. He was closely associated with Krittibas magazine and created a stir in the literary world by publishing Kobita Saptahiki, a weekly poetry magazine. Over his career, he authored and translated over a hundred collections of poetry and prose, with countless other pieces published in various magazines and journals.
He received the Ananda Puraskar, the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Gangadhar Meher Award from Sambalpur University, and the Rabindra Puraskar posthumously. Professionally, he worked as a journalist with Ananda Bazar Patrika. While serving as a visiting professor of Creative Literature at Visva-Bharati University, he passed away suddenly from a heart attack on March 23, 1995, in Santiniketan.
