Shamik Bandopadhyay (born 1940) introduces himself as a teacher, publisher, editor, and book producer. He earned a B.A. degree with honors in English literature from Presidency College, followed by an M.A. degree, and taught at South Point School, Ram Mohan College, and Rabindra Bharati University. In 1973, he joined the Indian branch of Oxford University Press as the regional editor for the East, beginning his career as a book editor. Alongside this, he became recognized for his research and commentary on drama, fine arts, cinema, and production design, which earned him teaching positions as a guest professor at institutions such as Jawaharlal Nehru University, Pune, Allahabad University, National School of Drama in Delhi, Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai, Brown and Pittsburgh Universities in the USA, Warwick University in the UK, and Freie Universität Berlin in Germany.
From 1989-1992, he served as the Producer Emeritus at All India Radio and Doordarshan. From 1993-1997, he was a Research Professor at the Asiatic Society, Kolkata. He was the Vice-President of the National School of Drama from 2006-2010 and served as the Rabindranath Tagore National Fellow at Jawaharlal Nehru University from 2015-2017. He was also the founding editor of Seegal Bud, and is currently the editor of Dhima Publications. He is one of the founding members of Pathabhavan School in Kolkata and serves on its management committee.
Over nearly sixty years, Shamik Bandopadhyay has had the opportunity to converse with many distinguished figures in the fields of literature, media, and culture. These interactions, spanning newspapers, radio, television, and academic circles, present an intimate portrait of Bengali culture over the past six decades. His works contain a narrative of history that serves as a valuable resource for researchers and is equally cherished by connoisseurs for its artistic richness.
