Promodachandra Sen (b. April 27, 1897, Cumilla, East Bengal) was a pioneering scholar in Bengali prosody and literary criticism. He completed his M.A. in Ancient Indian History and Culture from the University of Calcutta, securing the first position. His academic career began at Daulatpur College, Khulna (1932-42), and later, he became the Rabindra Professor of Bengali Literature and Director of Rabindra Bhavan at Visva-Bharati University (1942-65).
Sen first gained recognition through a series of articles on Bengali prosody in Prabasi magazine, which brought him into close association with Rabindranath Tagore, ultimately leading to his appointment at Visva-Bharati. His lifelong research (1922-85) produced over a hundred essays and seminal books such as Chhandojijnasa, Adhunik Bangla Chhandosahitya, and Chhandoguru Rabindranath, which filled a major gap in Bengali literary studies. His contributions earned him the reputation of being the foremost architect of Bengali prosodic studies.
Beyond prosody, he authored several intellectual works on Rabindranath Tagore, history, and other literary themes. His book Bharatatma Kobi Kalidas was honored with the prestigious Bankim Award.
